A mother & daughter trip

SOUTH AFRICA

1 country, 21 days, 1920 km

Bikes: Triumph Bobber -19

& Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster -19

South Africa –the land of wine & great adventures

Amazing coastal roads, colourful sunsets, unlimited seafood and wine, wine, wine… Riding in South Africa is like a motorcyclist’s wet dream.

The first question I get when mentioning mine and my mother’s trip in South Africa is “Was it safe?”. The truth is that South Africa is perfectly safe for tourists, if you know where to go – and not to go.

Cape Town is the perfect city to start your trip in, this city is full of cool things to see, amazing foods and great roads to explore. When you feel ready – the rest of the adventure is waiting just around the corner.

I'm so happy to have shared this trip with my amazing mother, Christina. To show her my world and at the same time explore a new corner of the world together.

Favorite sights

& stops

01/

TABLE MOUNTAIN, CAPE TOWN

One of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. There are free parking spots for motorcycles right outside the ticket office.

02/

V&A WATERFRONT, CAPE TOWN

Visit during the evening for drinks, dinner, street performances and the best sunset in the world.

03/

RETZA MOTORCYCLE TOURS, CAPE TOWN

Want to go exploring on a Royal Enfield? My friend Sabrina has the bikes and the map for a great journey! Link: https://retza.co.za/classic-enfield-tours-south-africa/

04/

ROBBEN ISLAND, CAPE TOWN

The place where Mandela was a prisoner during Apartheid. The tour is given by a former prisoner and the story they tell is like nothing else. I’ll never forget the hours spent on Robben Island.

05/

BLOUBERGSTRAND, CAPE TOWN

A suburb of Cape Town with long beaches and cool restaurants. Great view of Cape Town.

06/

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, CAPE TOWN

The legendary place you have to visit. In the same area as Cape Point. Very nice ride out there, but can be extremely windy.

07/

BOULDERS BEACH, CAPE TOWN

Want to hang out on a beach with wild penguins? Of course you want!

08/

SHARK DIVING, GANSBAAI

Me and my mom both loved this. We dived in a shark cage, only a meter from a 2 meters tall shark! That’s something to tell the grandkids about.

09/

THE MOST SOUTHERN POINT, L'AGULHAS

This place was extra cool for me since I just a couple of months earlier stood at North Cape – the most northern point of Europe.

10/

RONNIE'S SEX SHOP, ROUTE 62

The shop that once was named “Ronnie’s shop”, but thanks to Ronnie’s drunk friends got a new name overnight. A must stop for bikers in the area.

11/

KNYSNA

A popular destination by the coast. Very pretty and well worth a visit, if not for the oysters then for being able to cheer and say “Nice in Knysna!” since it’s pronounced with a silent k.

12/

FRANSCHHOEK

The heart of the wine districts. A little bit too fancy for me normally, but enjoyed it a lot together with mom. Took a wine tour with the hop on/hop off tram.

13/

MOSSEL BAY

An amazing little pearl by the coastline with steep hills and cute beaches. Calm and romantic. Hosting one of South Africa’s biggest annual motorcycle meetings.

14/

DIE SMITSWINKEL, OUDTSHOORN

The coolest motorcycle restaurant ever! Bikes everywhere, a big restaurant, great bar, accommodation in the backyard, a cute shop… Just take a stop here, ok?

15/

DIESEL & CREAM, BARRYDALE

A bit pricy for being in South Africa, but a cool place to drop by when riding Route 62.

The ROUTE

CAPE TOWN – CAPE OF GOOD HOPE

Rode out of city on Highway 2 + M3. Stopped in Muizenberg Beach. M75 is nicer than M4 there. Continued on M4 to Simon’s Town. Took the small road that divides M4 and M65 to Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point (two different places in the same area). Took M65 + M6 + Chapman’s Peak Drive back to Cape Town.

CAPE TOWN – GANSBAAI

Highway 2 to Gordons Bay, then R44 (very scenic) + R43 to Gansbaai.

GANSBAAI – L'AGULHAS

R317 + R43 + R319. The smaller roads here are gravel.

L'AGULHAS – MOSSEL BAY

R319 + Highway 2.

MOSSEL BAY – KNYSNA

Highway 2

KNYSNA – BARRYDALE

Highway 2 + 12 + Route 62.

BARRYDALE – FRANSCHHOEK

R324 + Highway 2 + R321 + R45.

favorite ROADS

01/

CHAPMAN'S PEAK DRIVE (M6)

Extremely scenic drive outside of Cape Town.

02/

CLARENCE DRIVE (R44)

Another curvy beauty you don’t want to miss. New, smooth roads next to the ocean. Extra pretty during sunset.

03/

OUTENIQUA PASS (HIGHWAY 12)

Right before Route 62 starts, a short but nice mountain pass.

05/

TRADOUWS PASS (R324)

A cool ride though the mountains after Route 62, only 14 km long but there are some cool views to enjoy.

06/

BAIN'S KLOOF PASS (R301)

North of Franschhoek, extremely beautiful road.

07/

FRANSCHHOEK PASS (R45)

The best way to enter Franschhoek, by far.

04/

ROUTE 62

South Africa’s answer to Route 66. Was once named as the best road trip destination in the world by CNN Travel. Very nice road with a lot to see and do.
